When should you wear a helmet on an electric bicycle?
The popularity of electric bicycles, or e-bikes, has increased enormously in recent years. These bicycles offer a good alternative for both recreational cycling and commuting. But with the rise of the e-bike, an important question also arises: when should you actually wear a helmet on an electric bicycle?
No helmet requirement for regular e-bikes
At the moment, there is no helmet requirement in the Netherlands for e-bikes that ride up to 25 km/h with support (the so-called regular electric bicycles or pedelecs ). According to the law, these bicycles fall into the same category as traditional bicycles. This means that you can decide for yourself whether or not to wear a helmet.
The speed pedelec: helmet requirement
An exception to this rule applies to the speed pedelec, a faster version of the e-bike that can reach a speed of 45 km/h. These bicycles are considered mopeds by law, which means that a helmet is mandatory. Since 2017, speed pedelecs fall under the same rules as mopeds and, in addition to a helmet, you must also have a moped driving license and license plate. For these bicycles, wearing a special speed pedelec helmet that complies with the NTA 8776 standard is mandatory. This type of helmet offers more protection than a regular bicycle helmet.
Why consider always wearing a helmet?
Although there is no legal requirement to wear a helmet on a regular e-bike, it may be wise to consider it. The speed you reach on an e-bike can be higher than on a regular bike, especially when cycling in a busy environment or when you travel longer distances. In addition, a helmet increases the chance that you will suffer less serious head injuries in an accident.
Research shows that wearing a helmet can significantly reduce the risk of head injuries. This is especially important for older cyclists, who often opt for the e-bike and are more vulnerable in the event of a fall. In other countries, such as Germany and Belgium, more and more people are therefore choosing to wear a helmet on a regular e-bike, even though this is not legally required.
Safety first
Safety should always be the first priority, whether you have to wear a helmet or not. It is important to be aware of the higher speed of an e-bike, and sometimes this means that a helmet is a good choice. Also, don't forget other safety measures, such as wearing reflective clothing, good bike lights and regular maintenance of your bike.
