5 tips for the correct tire pressure

Safe (electric) cycling and driving in autumn and winter largely depends on the correct tire pressure. How do you measure tire pressure, how often should you check the tire pressure and where can you find the tire pressure table for your car? You can read it all in this blog.

The right tire pressure for autumn and winter

Rain and leaves can make the road surface slippery in the fall. In winter, frost causes the same problem. From the autumn onwards it is therefore better not to inflate your tires too hard so that you have more grip on the road. This applies to both your bicycle and your car. Too high a tire pressure makes the tire narrow where it touches the road surface, causing you to lose grip.

Measuring the car's tire pressure: this is how you do it

Check the tires when they are cold. This is best done at home, with your own electric tire pump. The correct tire pressure for your tires can be found in the car's instruction manual, on the inside of the driver's side door, in the glove compartment, under the sun visor or on the inside of the fuel cap. Then look up the recommended pressure in the table based on the size of the tire. This is stated on the side of your tire. A different recommended pressure applies to the front and rear wheels. Make sure that the tire pressure is not too low, because that will cost you an unnecessary amount of fuel. With the correct tire pressure you drive more safely, but also more economically: it saves you 5 euros a month.

Which tire pressure for which bicycle tire

The minimum and maximum pressure of a bicycle tire is indicated on the side of your tire. In between, you can set your ideal tire pressure according to your preference. The thinner the tire, the harder you have to inflate it. Many cyclists ride on tires that are too weak. That gives you more grip, but too low tire pressure is also not good: it makes the tire susceptible to a puncture. The Cyclists' Union therefore also recommends purchasing a good bicycle pump with a tension meter and checking the tension regularly.

How often should you check your tire pressure?

Air-filled tires always lose some pressure naturally. Therefore, check the tire pressure of your car and bicycle at least once every two months. It is even better to check the tire pressure every week. Take it with you as a chore when washing your car - put an electric pump with your car wash products and you will automatically think of it. After leaving the car, also check your bike immediately.
