Listening to music on the bike: What is allowed?
Do you like listening to the radio while cycling, but you don't know whether that is allowed or not? You can listen to music while cycling, but you must do this hands-free. Anyone who has a mobile phone (or music player!) in their hand while cycling can easily receive a hefty fine. Since July 1, 2019, you are not allowed to hold electronic devices such as mobile phones, navigation systems, tablets or music players while cycling. You should also not clamp your phone between your ear and shoulder.

When you are standing still, you are allowed to hold and use electronic devices. You are also allowed to use electronic devices hands-free while cycling. You can listen to music or make calls, for example via earphones. You can also use voice control while on the road. You can also use your smartphone if it is in a holder. What should you pay attention to?
You must ensure that you can still hear the ambient noise, despite using earplugs. For example, don't use both earbuds, but one, or turn the volume down. There are also earplugs that you can adjust to hear the ambient noise clearly. Please note, this is not legislation, but it is recommended.
How do you use your phone safely on the bike?
You can safely use your phone or other mobile electronic device while cycling as long as it is in a holder. This way you can quickly click on something if, for example, your navigation system suggests an alternative route. It is completely safe to stop for a while.
