The French valve, also known as the Presta valve, is one of the most common valve types on racing bikes, mountain bikes and other high-performance bicycles. However, over time this valve may become worn or damaged, making it necessary to replace it. Fortunately, replacing a French valve is a relatively simple task that you can do yourself with the right tools and some basic knowledge. In this blog post you can read how you can replace your French valve yourself.

Please note, not all inner tubes have a French valve that you can replace. Schwalbe brand inner tubes have replaceable valves, but many other tires do not. First check carefully whether you can replace the valve on your tire before you get started. If you cannot replace the French valve, you will have to replace the entire inner tube.

Tools required:

1. Valve remover or tool (often supplied with the purchase of a new valve)
2. New French valve
3. Pump

Steps:

1. Let the air out of the tire: First deflate the tire by letting the air out. You can easily deflate the tire with your hand. You don't need any tools for that. This makes it easier to slide the tire off the valve.
2. Remove the old valve: The packaging of the new valve contains a small black tool that you place on the old valve and use it to unscrew the old valve.
3. Place the new valve: Take the new French and screw it into the connection piece of the valve. Tighten the last piece properly with the supplied tool mentioned earlier. Important; make sure it is properly secured, otherwise the valve will leak.
4. Inflate the tire: Once the tire is completely replaced on the rim, use a pump to inflate the tire to the recommended pressure. Check that the valve is properly sealed and no air is escaping.
