More than half of car owners drive with underinflated tires. We previously described that the correct tire pressure is important for safety , but properly inflated tires also reduce environmental impact. Less CO2 emissions

According to Milieu Centraal, properly inflated car tires can save up to 75 kilos of CO2 emissions per year because you use less fuel. Nationally, this would save about 0.4 megatons of CO2 per year, the government estimates. For comparison: that is the annual emissions of all households in the municipality of Groningen. That would make a significant contribution to the climate goals.

Less wear on your tires

Hard tires wear out less quickly, meaning less tire grinding ends up in the environment. In addition, you consume fewer tires, because good tire pressure extends their lifespan. If you drive an electric car, tire pressure is even more important. Electric cars are often heavier than comparable fuel-powered cars, which means that the tires wear out more quickly. With the correct tire pressure you can reduce this effect.

Tire pressure and fuel economy

That is good for the environment, but also for your wallet. Your fuel savings amount to about 60 euros per year. And because properly inflated tires last longer, this also saves you having to purchase new tires.

How often do you check?

It would be best to check the tire pressure every two months, because car tires always deflate slightly in between. Now only a quarter of Dutch car owners regularly check the tire pressure. Motorists under the age of 25 keep track of tire pressure even less well: half never check the tire pressure. Many people think that the garage checks the voltage, but that only happens three times a year. So take matters into your own hands.
