How heavy is an electric bicycle?
You've probably noticed that electric bikes are a bit heavier than regular bikes. This is because they have extra parts for the electric support. In this blog post we explain what the average weight of an electric bike is and where the extra weight comes from.
The weight of an electric bicycle
Regular city bikes usually weigh around 18 kilos, while e-bikes weigh between 23 and 28 kilos on average. Without a battery, that weight can be between 20 and 25 kilos. If you add the battery, that adds around 3 kilos. But there are big differences in weight between different electric bikes.
What makes an e-bike so heavy?
An e-bike has extra parts that you won't find on a bike without electric pedal assistance. The parts that add the most weight are the engine and the battery(s). In addition, the frame of an e-bike is wider to be able to carry the extra weight. In addition, the bicycle tires are on average wider than those of a regular bicycle.
Due to these extra parts and the modified frame, an electric bicycle is on average heavier than a regular bicycle.
Consequences of an e-bike that is too heavy
The higher weight of electric bicycles has some important consequences, especially when using a bicycle carrier. One of the most important points of attention here is the nose weight, or the maximum vertical load that the tow bar of your vehicle can carry. Electric bicycles are heavier than regular bicycles, which means that there is a good chance that the nose weight will be reached or even exceeded quickly. This can not only lead to unsafe situations on the road, but also to damage to your vehicle.
It is therefore essential to check the maximum nose weight of your tow bar before transporting electric bicycles. In addition, it is advisable to invest in a bicycle carrier with a gutter, which allows you to easily drive the bicycle onto the carrier instead of lifting it. This not only makes loading easier, but also safer. By following these tips, you can travel carefree and safely with your electric bicycles.
Do you want to make your electric bicycle a little lighter?
A handy tip is to remove the battery from the bike during transport. This will quickly make the bike 2.5-3 kg lighter. This makes lifting the bike a lot easier, especially if you want to place it on a bike carrier, for example. Removing the battery also has another advantage: it is better for the lifespan of the battery. By storing the battery indoors, it remains at a constant temperature, which extends its lifespan.
