Winter tires: it's time to change again

It is a recurring job: changing the car tires. But when exactly should winter tires be put on? And why is it not safe to drive on winter tires all year round?

When is it time to change to winter tires?

November is the time to switch to winter tires. A handy tip so you don't forget: when you change the clock, immediately think about changing the tires. At temperatures below 7 °C, winter tires are really necessary to travel safely on the road. 

The tread depth of winter tires

Winter tires can be recognized by the M+S and/or 3PMSF markings on the sidewall. The tread depth and the design of the grooves provide more grip on the road. Why are winter tires safer

Winter tires are not just about tread: they are also made of material that is suitable for low temperatures. This way you can be sure that the rubber remains flexible despite the cold. That is very safe, because a hard tire is much more sensitive to the risk of slipping.

Winter tires mandatory in Germany and Austria

Winter tires are mandatory in Germany or Austria in winter conditions between November 1 and April 15. Good to keep an eye on if you go on holiday during this period, because you risk a hefty fine. For example, if you obstruct traffic because you drive without winter tires, it will cost you €80. You will also receive a penalty point. With 18 penalty points you run the risk of being disqualified from driving in Germany. Suppose you cause an accident, not driving on winter tires can be seen as gross negligence.

What should you pay attention to with all-season tires?

Do you have all season tires? Make sure that they indeed have a 3PMSF marking. You can use these all year round. All-season tires with a snowflake symbol are considered winter tires in Germany and Austria. So you can safely drive to your winter sports destination on these tires.
